A/C Not Cold: Working Through the Causes in Order

In South Florida this is not a comfort issue. Here is the diagnostic order, from the free checks to the ones needing gauges.

Air conditioning in South Florida is not optional equipment. When it stops cooling, here is the order worth working through — starting with the checks that cost nothing.

1. The cabin air filter

First, because it is free and it is genuinely often the answer. A clogged cabin filter restricts airflow through the evaporator, so you get weak vent output even with a perfectly healthy A/C system.

It is usually behind the glovebox. Pull it and look. In this climate they load up fast.

2. Is it cooling at all, or just weakly?

Two different problems.

**Air is cold but weak** points at airflow: the cabin filter, the blower motor, a blend door, or a frozen evaporator.

**Air is strong but not cold** points at the refrigerant system: charge level, compressor, or a control problem.

3. Does the compressor engage?

With the engine running and the A/C on maximum, listen and look at the compressor clutch on the front of the compressor. It should click in and the center of the pulley should spin with the outer part.

**If it never engages:** low refrigerant is the most common cause, because a low-pressure switch prevents the compressor from running without adequate charge — which protects it from running dry. Other causes are an electrical fault, a failed clutch, or a pressure switch.

**If it cycles on and off rapidly:** usually a low charge.

**If it runs constantly but the air is not cold:** the compressor may have failed internally, or there is a restriction in the system.

4. Refrigerant charge and the leak question

A/C systems are sealed. **They do not consume refrigerant.** If yours is low, there is a leak, and the leak is the actual repair.

This is the most important point in this article. Those recharge cans from the parts store put refrigerant into a leaking system, which cools for a while and then leaks out again. Meanwhile many of them contain sealer, which can contaminate the system and damage the recovery equipment a shop needs to use — turning a leak repair into a much bigger job.

Common leak points are the compressor shaft seal, O-rings and fittings, the condenser at the front of the vehicle where road debris hits it, the evaporator inside the dash, and hoses. Leaks get found with dye or an electronic detector, not by guessing.

5. Airflow at the condenser

The condenser sits at the front and needs air moving through it to reject heat. In stop-and-go traffic that air comes from the cooling fans.

A classic symptom: A/C cold on the highway, warm in traffic. That is a cooling fan not running, or a condenser plugged with leaves and debris. Both are common here and neither is expensive.

6. Inside the dash

Blend door actuators control whether air passes through the heater core or the evaporator. A failed actuator produces air that is cold on one side and warm on the other, or a system that will not switch. They frequently announce themselves with a clicking noise from behind the dash.

The South Florida reality
