A Corroded Ground Looks Exactly Like a Failed Module

On the South Florida coast, a substantial share of what gets diagnosed as a failed sensor, module or component is a corroded connection. It is the single most over-replaced category of part there is.

Why grounds matter so much

Every electrical circuit needs a return path. On a vehicle that path is the body and the engine block, connected back to the battery negative by ground straps and by dozens of individual ground points bolted to the chassis.

When a ground point corrodes, resistance rises. The circuit still works — until it is asked to carry current, at which point the voltage available at the component drops. That produces symptoms that look exactly like a failing component: intermittent operation, slow operation, warning lights, and codes that point at the component rather than at the connection feeding it.

What it looks like

• Multiple unrelated symptoms at once — lights dimming when something else is used
• Intermittent faults that come and go with weather or with vibration
• Codes for several circuits that share a ground point
• Slow cranking with a battery that tests fine
• Dashboard lights behaving oddly
• A component that was replaced and did not fix the problem

Where to look on a coastal vehicle

1. 1Battery terminals and the clamps themselves, including under the insulation.
2. 2The main negative cable where it bolts to the block or the chassis.
3. 3Engine-to-body ground straps.
4. 4Individual ground points behind wheel arches and under the vehicle, which take the most salt spray.
5. 5Connectors low on the vehicle, which take road spray.
6. 6Anywhere a previous repair left a connection unprotected.

Fixing it properly

Clean to bright metal, reassemble to the correct torque, and protect it. Dielectric grease on the outside of a connection, not inside the contact area. A connection cleaned and left bare on the Florida coast is a connection that will corrode again within a year.
