Diagnosing a Noise or Vibration by When It Happens

The single most useful diagnostic question is what the noise responds to — speed, engine RPM, braking, or turning. Here is the decision tree.

Noise and vibration complaints are among the hardest to describe and among the easiest to narrow down, provided you answer one question: what does it respond to?

Does it change with vehicle speed or engine speed?

This is the first fork and it eliminates half the possibilities.

**Test:** get up to a speed where the noise is present, then shift to neutral and let the engine drop to idle while still rolling.

**Noise continues unchanged** — it is related to wheel or driveline rotation: tires, wheel bearings, brakes, CV joints, driveshaft.

**Noise changes or stops** — it is engine speed related: belt, accessory, exhaust, engine internals, transmission.

Noises that respond to steering

**A hum that changes when you turn** — wheel bearing. Turning loads the opposite side, so a noise that worsens turning left usually means the right bearing.

**A clicking that appears on tight turns**, especially under acceleration — a CV joint, on the side you are turning away from.

**A groan or whine only while turning the wheel** — power steering, on vehicles that still use hydraulic assist.

**A clunk when turning the wheel while stationary** — a strut mount bearing or a steering component.

Noises that respond to braking

**Squeal on light braking** — wear indicators or pad material.

**Grinding** — pads worn through to metal. Stop driving.

**Pulsation in the pedal** — rotor runout, or a rotor mounted on a dirty hub face.

**A clunk on the first brake application** after moving — often caliper hardware or a worn suspension bushing letting something shift.

Noises that respond to bumps

**A single clunk over bumps** — sway bar end links most often, or a worn bushing. These are inexpensive parts and they get blamed on struts constantly.

**Continued bouncing** after a bump — shocks or struts.

**A rattle over rough surfaces** — heat shields are a very common and harmless culprit, worth ruling out early.

Vibration: where do you feel it?

**In the steering wheel** — usually front wheels or tires: balance, a bent wheel, tire separation, or brake rotor runout if it appears under braking.

**In the seat or floor** — usually rear wheels, driveshaft or driveline.

**At a specific speed range**, coming and going — classic wheel balance.

**Only under acceleration** — driveline: CV joints, U-joints, or engine and transmission mounts.

**At idle, disappearing when driving** — engine mounts, or a misfire.

The ones to act on quickly

  • Grinding while braking
  • A clunk with any looseness in the steering
  • Vibration that suddenly appeared and is getting worse
  • Any noise accompanied by a warning light
  • A rhythmic thumping that speeds up with the vehicle, which can indicate tire separation

That last one is a genuine safety issue — a tire coming apart internally produces a thump before it fails.
