Air Filters: The Cheapest Maintenance Nobody Does

Two filters, both cheap, both easy, and both routinely neglected until something else gets blamed. Here is what each actually does.

The engine air filter

Every bit of air your engine burns passes through it. Its job is keeping abrasive particulate out of the cylinders, where grit acts like sandpaper on the cylinder walls and rings.

When it clogs, airflow drops. On a modern engine the computer compensates by reducing fuel, so you typically get gradually worse fuel economy and reduced power rather than a dramatic failure. Severely restricted, it can trigger a check engine light through mass airflow readings that do not match expectations.

**How to check it:** open the airbox, pull the filter, hold it up to light. If you cannot see light through the pleats, it is done. If it is loaded with leaves, seeds or insects, it has been in there a while.

The cabin air filter

This one filters the air coming into the passenger compartment through the HVAC system. It has nothing to do with engine performance and everything to do with what you breathe and how well your A/C works.

A clogged cabin filter restricts airflow through the evaporator, which means weak vent output even when the A/C system itself is perfectly healthy. We get called for weak air conditioning regularly and find a cabin filter that looks like a dryer lint trap.

It is also where musty A/C smells frequently originate, because a damp, dirty filter in a humid climate grows exactly what you would expect.

Why they clog faster here

South Florida throws a lot at both filters: year-round pollen, construction dust, salt-laden coastal air, and high humidity that makes fine particulate stick rather than blow through.

Whatever interval your manual states, expect to be at the shorter end of it. If your car lives near the beach or you commute past construction, shorter still.

Doing it yourself

Engine air filters are usually a few clips on an airbox lid. Cabin filters are most often behind the glovebox, which typically drops down after releasing a stop on each side.

Two things to get right: orientation, since most filters have an airflow arrow, and seating, since a filter that is not properly seated lets unfiltered air bypass it entirely.

What not to bother with

Reusable oiled cotton filters get marketed hard. On a normal street car they offer no meaningful performance benefit, and over-oiling one can contaminate a mass airflow sensor, which is an expensive way to save on filters. A quality paper filter, changed on schedule, is the right answer for almost everyone.
