We do mobile work and we think it is the right answer for most jobs. It is not the right answer for all of them, and a mobile mechanic who claims otherwise is telling you something about their judgement.
Where mobile is genuinely better
- **You do not lose a day.** No dropping off, no waiting room, no arranging a ride.
- **You watch the work.** That transparency is worth more than most people credit, and it changes the conversation.
- **No tow on a no-start.** A vehicle that will not start is exactly where mobile makes most sense.
- **A fleet is serviced where it parks**, which costs no downtime.
- **No shop overhead** in the price.
Where a shop is genuinely better
- **Anything needing a lift** for safe access underneath. Jack stands have limits and there is no honest way around that.
- **Transmission removal and internal work.**
- **Engine removal and internal engine work.**
- **Timing belts on many designs**, which need specific tooling and controlled conditions.
- **Tyres and alignment**, which need machines that do not travel.
- **Exhaust work requiring cutting and welding.**
- **Post-repair calibration** of driver assistance systems on newer vehicles.
- **Anything on a site that is unsafe** — a slope, soft ground, a busy road, or no room to work.
The grey area
Some jobs are borderline and depend on the specific vehicle and the specific site. A water pump is straightforward on some engines and a serious job on others. A radiator is accessible on some vehicles and buried on others. We look at the actual vehicle rather than the category.
What makes a mobile visit go well
- 1A level, solid surface with room around the vehicle.
- 2Space for a service truck nearby.
- 3Permission from the property or the association if one applies.
- 4A clear description of the symptom rather than a diagnosis.
- 5Any recent work mentioned up front.
- 6Realistic expectations about what can be finished in one visit.
