Spark Plugs and Coils: When to Replace and What Happens If You Do Not

Modern plugs last a long time, and they do not last forever. Here is what worn plugs do to an engine and why coils fail alongside them.

Spark plugs used to be a routine tune-up item every 30,000 miles. Modern iridium and platinum plugs go far longer, which has produced a generation of drivers who have never thought about them at all — until a coil fails and the misfire starts.

What wears

Every spark erodes a tiny amount of material from the electrodes. Over tens of thousands of ignitions the gap grows. A wider gap requires more voltage to jump, and that demand falls on the ignition coil.

So worn plugs do not simply spark weakly. They put the coils under increasing electrical stress, which is why coil failures cluster around the mileage where plugs are overdue. Replacing a failed coil without replacing the plugs frequently means another coil failing shortly after.

Symptoms of worn plugs

  • Rough idle, particularly noticeable at a stoplight
  • Hesitation or stumble under acceleration
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Harder starting, especially when cold or damp
  • A check engine light, often with misfire codes
  • A subtle loss of power you only notice in hindsight after they are replaced

Misfires do damage beyond running rough

This is the part that turns a maintenance item into a repair bill. When a cylinder misfires, unburned fuel goes out the exhaust and into the catalytic converter, where it ignites. That superheats the converter and can destroy it.

A catalytic converter costs dramatically more than a set of spark plugs. If your check engine light is flashing rather than steady, that indicates an active misfire severe enough to damage the converter, and the correct response is to stop driving and get it diagnosed.

Intervals

Follow the manufacturer's specification, which varies enormously by engine and plug type. Copper plugs need frequent replacement, platinum and iridium go much longer. Some direct-injected and turbocharged engines specify shorter intervals than their naturally aspirated equivalents.

The right plug for your engine is the one specified — heat range, thread reach and electrode design are engineering choices, not marketing.

Why the job is not always simple

On some engines plugs are four bolts and twenty minutes. On others, particularly transverse V6 layouts, the rear bank sits against the firewall and reaching it requires removing the intake manifold. That is the difference between a quick job and a half-day one, and it is worth knowing before you get a quote.

Other complications: plugs seized into aluminum heads after long intervals, which is exactly why leaving them in far past the interval is a bad idea, and coil boots that have bonded to the plugs.

The South Florida angle

Heat and humidity are hard on ignition components. Coil boots dry out and crack, letting spark leak to ground, and moisture in the plug wells makes it worse. If your engine runs rough on a humid morning and clears up later, cracked boots are a strong suspect.
